Consumers are often unaware that the lower priced mulch is created from discarded pallets and other debris. It may be cheaper, but it is in fact really unhealthy for your trees, plants and shrubs. Poor quality mulches leach nutrients from your healthy plants, causing yellowing leaves, and eventually killing the plant material. Very often chemical dyes are added to “enhance” the appearance of un-aged mulch. Research done at the University of Maryland Department of horticulture confirms the harmful nature of un-composted high cellulose fiber mulches. Which type of mulch is your contractor proposing to provide?

Topsoil is another profit maker for unscrupulous contractors. Fill dirt containing little or no organic matter is screened and sold as “Topsoil”.
